The portfolio system also allows for the loading of one data file at a time without creating a portfolio, but for
efficiency and the ability to quickly analyze a number of different data files, the portfolio system is a more
convenient method.
We recommend that you create portfolios of related data. For example, you can have one portfolio with
stocks and one with futures or another with exchange trade funds. Portfolios can also contain a mix of
different data types. You can have Metastock, CSI and ASCII data types all in one single portfolio.
It is important that you plan your portfolios, what types of data you intend to keep in a specific portfolio. Try
to keep your portfolios from being too big and bulky to work with. Remember in Techsignal you can
analyze only one data file at a time. So, having big portfolios may make it difficult to remember what type of
information is where.
The idea behind the portfolio system is to make it easier for you to quickly analyze your data. If you have
huge portfolios then the advantage is lost. Once you reach the first screen, Main Menu Data Input, go to
the Build and Edit Portfolios button and follow the commands. You will begin by first naming and creating a
portfolio file that will contain the path to your data. You will then select the files you want in your portfolio
and then save your portfolio containing your desired symbols. You are now ready to begin analyzing your
data. Techsignal provides an article which reviews the details of creating and working with portfolios,
entitled Building Portfolios in Techsignal. This article is found in your Techsignal folder at C:\FSCTS
along with other articles about the operations of the program.
Working with Techsignal
1.4 How to Use the Program
Begin Techsignal by double-clicking the Techsignal icon located on your Desktop.
After the program opens, select a portfolio and a data symbol for analysis. Techsignal takes over and
loads the data for that symbol, plots the data in a graph, runs a Spectral Analysis looking for cycles, and
displays the results in a grid below the plotted data.
The Techsignal program may also be opened by double clicking the application file TechSignal.exe
located in the FCSTS folder located at C:\Program Files\FCSTS\ TechSignal.exe.
