for pasting into a document like Microsoft Word.
There are also screen capture tools available from third party vendors which let you capture what is
displayed on your screen. SnagIt is one such third party vendor with a screen capture tool which works
particularly well with Techsignal but you should be able to print and export with your own setup. See
SnagIt (below) for more information.
Print
After clicking on the Print and Export icon, a dialog box opens up in which you find three frames containing
choices. The three frames are Export type, Export destination, and Object size. In order to print your graph
with its various cycles and studies, you must select Metafile as the Export type and Printer as Export
destination. The Printer choice will be grayed out if you do not choose Metafile. Then you decide the size
of your printed graph in the Object size frame.
PRINTER SETTINGS: the commonly used printer settings are Metafile, Printer, and Full Page, unless you
want to size the printed output yourself. If you wish to size the printed output yourself, you can choose in
the Object size frame (with both Metafile and Printer already selected) among millimeters, inches or points.
Neither Printer nor Export settings can be saved; either accept the default settings or change the settings to
your choices each time you print or export.
Note that when you open the Print and Export dialog box, the immediate default choices are BMP, Clipboard
and Pixels; those settings let you put your chart from the clipboard into a document like Microsoft Word
(below). You must change those default settings in order to print your document.
Export
In exporting a Techsignal work product, you begin from the Export frame and choose the file type from
four choices of Metafile, BMP, PNG, or JPG. There is also a text file option (.txt) showing but it is not a
choice Techsignal uses. Techsignal uses an industry-standard graphics package, but the nature of
Techsignal formatting does not allow the output of Techsignal material directly into a text file (.txt).
File or Clipboard
This File or Clipboard option in the Export destination frame allows you to save a graph to a file or send a
graph to the Clipboard. Both of these choices accomplish a similar result, an image file such as a BMP,
JPG, PNG or Metafile. We like the Clipboard choice since you can paste the Clipboard contents into
another document like Microsoft Word by using your mouse right click feature, and then save the file from
there as either that single graph or as part of a larger document.
Before hitting Export and sending your graph to the Clipboard, you can adjust the image size for Metafile by
selecting the graph output size in millimeters, inches or points; or you can adjust the image size in pixels if
you selected BMP, JPG, or PNG as the file type. The recommended default pixel sizes are 700 by 432
which is close to a golden section or Fibonacci ratio of .618. If you like the ratio but need a smaller size file,
enter your needed width and multiply that by .618 for the appropriate height.
File or Clipboard STEPS:
1)
To Send to Clipboard (a or b): a) select BMP, JPG or PNG Clipboard adjust pixel size if needed --
Export button, and your graph is sent to the Clipboard -- open a program like Microsoft Word -- paste
the Clipboard contents into a Word document by right click -- paste. Once in a Word document, you
can double click on the graph and make adjustments to the graph size, brightness, and other features;
b) select Metafile Clipboard adjust Object size in millimeters, inches, points or no specific size (the
default) -- Export to the Clipboard -- paste like above.
2)
To Save to File: select BMP, JPG or PNG (do not choose Metafile) File (in the Export destination
frame) -- click in the empty, grayed box to the right of Browse -- enter a file name for your graph, hit
save and the same grayed box will now show the path, filename and extension of your file to save -- hit
the Export button and the file is saved.
