The Techsignal™ program's sample data which came with your Techsignal™ CD can be deleted if you wish
once you have created your own portfolios. You can name and group data in any way you desire.  Many
users create separate portfolios for futures, stocks, fixed income and others.  The choice is up to you.
When you name a portfolio you are creating, the name and location of this portfolio are placed in the
Portfolio Available list as a portfoliolist.txt file.  Remember the portfolio itself does not contain your data, only
the name of and path to your actual data.  The first portfolio created is placed at the top of this list.  If you
have a favorite portfolio, you can edit this filename with a text editor and put your favorite portfolio on top.
The Portfolio system allows you to choose the data you wish to analyze and organize it according to your
needs. We have included access to the text editor Notepad through an icon on the two main Techsignal™
screens.  This editor will allow you to edit the Portfolio list and the individual data files.
Portfolios are created and edited through the Build and Edit Portfolios button on the Main Menu Data Input
screen. The process is simple.  From here you select Build Portfolios and name your portfolio.  Then you
populate the portfolio with your data files.  Remember that ASCII files will force you to enter a Graph
Description or title of your graph. The Graph Descriptions for CSI and Metastock are generated
automatically from those data files, and you don’t need to name them.  And remember that a portfolio can
contain mixed data types.
There is an article entitled “Building Portfolios in Techsignal™ included on your Techsignal™ CD and on
your computer at C:\FSCTS after you install the program.  This article covers building and working with
portfolios in a step-by-step process.
Add New Portfolio
The process of creating a new portfolio takes place in several steps.  There is a detailed paper entitled
“Building Portfolios in Techsignal™” which walks you through the process.
The first step is to name the portfolio and place it in a folder of your choice. Next you need to add files to the
portfolio. You must double click and highlight the portfolio before adding files.  Pay close attention to the
steps.  The list box that shows the contents of a portfolio will not appear until a portfolio is double clicked. In
Metastock and CSI data you can add all the files to a portfolio at once using a Master or Qmaster file, or you
can add data files one at a time.
ASCII files are added one file at a time and require you to type in a Graph name or title. CSI and Metastock
files  store a graph name or title which the Techsignal™ program recognizes and reads (e.g., INTC, GM).
Once the files are added you then click the Save files and Continue button and start your analysis. Portfolios
and the Master Portfolios files are text files and can be edited in a text editor like Notepad. Remember if you
change the location of the data files on your disk, you will have to rebuild your portfolio.
Edit a Portfolio
When you go to the Build o Edit a portfolio, you have two choices on the screen, Begin New Portfolio and
Quit. If you double click and highlight an existing portfolio in the list box a box below, the Portfolio contents
will appear. Also a new Command button will appear on the screen, Edit a Portfolio. When you click on this
button, four more choices will appear:  Delete a Portfolio, Delete a file in a portfolio, Add a file to an existing
Portfolio and Save Files and Continue.  The buttons do exactly what the button description says.  You must
save your work to have your changes recorded.  When you delete a portfolio, you do not remove it from the
disk. You simply remove it from the Portfolio list you see in Portfolios Available  The Portfolio.txt file still
exists in the Techsignal™ folder C:\FSCTS, and the actual data files still exist somewhere else on your
computer.
1.8 Program defaults
The Techsignal™ program is quite mathematically complex, but also user friendly so that the user can
easily customize the way the program analyzes data. This is accomplished through customizable program
defaults which are accessed through the first Techsignal™ screen called the Main Menu Data Input screen,
and which are stored in a text file called FSCTScycle.ini located in the C:\FSCTS folder.
